Alexei Levin's Moscow Worker headlines auction of Russian posters at $12,000

Alexei Levin's 1924 poster for the Moscow Worker magazine was the headline lot of a sale of Russian posters at Mercer & Middlesex Auctions in New Jersey on June 29.

Featuring previously unrecorded text from playwright and futurist artist Vladimir Mayakovsky, the piece achieved a solid $12,000.

Levin Mayakovsky
The text reads: "Rabochiye, chto chitat' vam? (What Should You Read, Workers?)"

Mayakovsky was among the most fervent supporters of the soviet state during the early 1900s but grew disillusioned with the encroaching philistinism and lack of artistic freedom.

He shot himself in 1930.
