Alexander Calder's Maripose (1960) has sold for $1.8m at Bonhams' Contemporary Art sale in New York.
The hanging wire sculpture is a classic example of the abstract, kinetic mobiles for which Calder is best known, and achieved a 12% increase on a $1.6m high estimate at the November 12 auction.

It had been privately held in the collection of a Wisconsin-based collector since the 1970s.
Jeremy Goldsmith, director of contemporary art at Bonhams New York, commented prior to the sale: "In Maripose, every element of Calder's genius is evident through the striking sense of balance and momentum the sculpture evokes."
Lily of Force holds the record for a work by Calder, realising $18.5m in 2012.
Untitled (SS 446, Hanging, Seven-Lobed-Single-Layer-Continuous-Form) by the late Ruth Asawa (1926-2013) realised $389,000 at the sale.
The work dates to 1952 and is constructed from looped brass wire that is woven into a hanging, geometric form.
Asawa studied under luminaries such as Josef and Anni Albers and Buckminster Fuller during her time as a student at the Black Mountain College.
An untitled work from the late 1960s holds the artist's auction record, achieving $1.4m at Christie's earlier this year.
Josef Albers' Study for Homage to the Square "Fall Finale" (1963) made $233,000.
Albers (1888-1976) became a lecturer on handicrafts at the Weimar Bauhaus in 1923, and was promoted to professor in 1925 - the year that the school moved to Dessau.
When the Nazis shut it down in 1933 he emigrated to the United States, where he taught at the Black Mountain College and Yale University.
His work incorporates both European and American elements and was hugely influential on subsequent generations of artists - with many of the great American modernists starting out as his students.
