Greek Hellenistic silver tray achieves $52,000 in London

A Greek Hellenistic silver serving tray was the lead lot in a sale at Timeline Auctions in London on February 13, achieving £34,000 ($52,272).

The lot used to form part of a prestigious British collection. The distinctive sphinx figures at each corner identify it as probably originating from the island of Chios.

The sphinx was used as an official symbol of Chios during ancient times and appears on coins and other material produced there.
