The week will see a series of auctions, viewings and events, led by the Important American Furniture, Outsider and Folk Art auction on January 23. Highlighting the sale is John Singleton Copley's Portrait of Samuel Phillips Savage at $500,000-700,000.
A Chippendale carved cherrywood desk and bookcase created around 1785 is valued at $400,000-600,000. Hailing from Lancaster, Pennslyvania, it is described by Christie's as "a masterful expression of American regionalism" and "one of the most significant survivals of the distinctive school of craftsmanship that flourished in late 18th century Lancaster County."
The auction will offer several prominent collections, including the estate of Eric Martin Wunsch, Jane Supino and the renowned Allan Stone. From the Wunsch estate comes a Queen Anne parcel-filt tall-case clock by William Claggett, which is estimated at $100,000-150,000 as a rare survivor of Rhode Island craftsmanship.
The Rosebrook Collection offers a Queen Anne mahogany turret-top card table with drawer valued at $30,000-50,000, while the estate of Jane Supino is led by a portrait attributed to Ruth Whittier ($20,000-50,000), who captured the likenesses of many that came to find work in New England and New York in the 1830s.
