A remarkable Ancient Greek gold olive wreath has sold for $295,000 at Christie's.
|
The piece dates to the 4th century BC and was one of the highlights of a sale of antiquities in New York on October 25.
Such wreaths were originally presented to victors at the Olympic Games, but came to be used as tributes for the dead.
The leaves on this example appear to have melted at the front, indicating it may have been burned at a funeral pyre.
