Adrienne Falconer, president of Matanee Galleries, explains: "Ambassador and Mrs. Petri are both originally from Sweden and now retired in Florida. Ragnar Petri served as Swedish ambassador and consulate to many nations, including Japan, Ecuador, Germany, Spain and Colombia.

"Ingrid Petri was born into a family of collectors. Her father was Gylfe Burdin, a prosperous Stockholm businessman and art aficionado who acquired only the finest antique Asian porcelain, which Ingrid eventually inherited."

The Petri collection, which has never been presented at auction before, is largely comprised of antique Chinese porcelain.

Of the lots on offer, an important 18th/19th century famille verte covered jar and an enamelled 17th century Kangxi period Chinese plate are expected to highlight proceedings, estimated at $5,000 apiece.

A rare 17th century Chinese verte covered box has been valued at $3,000-5,000, while a Chinese Guangxu blue and white dish is believed to be worth $2,000-5,000.

A number of Staffordshire silhouettes and miniature portraits are also to star, with a 19th century "blue john" urn, which has been converted into a lamp, estimated at $3,000-5,000.

"Blue john" - a naturally occurring mineral prized for its veined appearance - was discovered in Britain by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago. Historically, it has been used in the manufacture of candlesticks and decorative vessels.

At the end of this month, another important collection is to cross the auction block: the contents of English stately home Trelissick House, including a rare Chinese vase anticipated to make in excess of £100,000 ($155,609), will auction in conjunction with Bonhams.
