Great Britain 1855 1d Red Brown Plate 37 (Die II, Alphabet III), SG29
A very fine unused, with original gum, block of four, lettered 'KE–LF', from Plate 37 of the 1855 1d red-brown issue.
Printed by Perkins Bacon on Large Crown watermarked paper in the earliest red-brown shade of the perforated 1d, from the first Alphabet III/Die II plates brought into use in 1855. Mint blocks with original gum from Plate 37 are seldom seen, and this example shows particularly fine centring and fresh colour for the issue.
Printed using Die II and Alphabet III. Die II was introduced to strengthen a head-engraving that had become weak on earlier printings.
Blocks of this quality and preservation are increasingly difficult to find.
