China 1932-33 Sinkiang Airmail provisionals set of 4 to 30c deep brownish purple, SG83/6.
A fine quality mint set. The 5c rosy mauve and 15c deep blue are both fresh with large part original gum. The 30c deep brownish purple with a few tones and the 10c blue unused without gum, each signed by Livingston guaranteed handstamp on reverse.
A scarce and popular set. Very few complete sets exist and most have more significant condition flaws.
The catalogue value is £4,000.
Stamps were overprinted for special use in the Chinese Province of Sinkiang because of the debasement of the paper currency in the province to about a quarter of the value of the silver coinage of China.
These stamps were authorised for payment of air mail postage on correspondence carried by a service from Tihwa, owing to shortage of the regular air stamps. The 15c and 30c paid the original rate to Lanchow and Eastern China respectively, while the 5c and 10c were used with other stamps to make up the later rates of 50c and $1 to the same destinations.
