China 1912 Shanghai 'Republic of China’ overprint $2 claret and yellow "Bean Goose", SG205var.
A very fine and scarce unused example of the $2 claret and yellow with vertical "Republic of China" overprint in black, applied at the Shanghai Printing Works.
The printing variety displays the prominent major re-entry flaw, most notably evident as doubling of the Chinese character for '2' in the top right value tablet.
Well-centred for the issue with fresh colour and strong impression. Slightly off-centre with a couple of small gum tones, otherwise a particularly desirable example with large part original gum.
A rare and highly sought-after printing variety from the early Chinese Republic period.
Chan Catalogue No: 165a.
On 10 October 1911 a revolution began in Wuchang. Whilst awaiting the course of events, post offices in some cities overprinted imperial stamps with 'Provisional Neutrality'.
On 15 February 1912, Yuan Shih-kai was elected provisional president of the Chinese Republic. On 11 December 1915 he was elected Emperor, but in face of revolts he revoked the monarchy on 22 March 1916.
