- Alfred the Great London Monogram silver penny (circa 886)
A highly rare Alfred the Great London silver penny. Produced circa to celebrate Alfred's acquisition of London from the Danes.
Alfred the Great played a pivotal role in defending England against the Danish Viking invasions. In 878, he halted their westward advance, marking a turning point in the conflict. Following this, Alfred and Guthrum, the Danish leader, negotiated a treaty that divided the country. Alfred retained control of the lands south and west of Watling Street. In 886, Alfred solidified his influence by recapturing London, further strengthening his kingdom and securing his legacy as a unifier of England.
