King George IV
Royal governess Lady Charlotte Finch collected a lock of King George IV's hair in December 1782.
The eldest son of George III and Queen Charlotte, George IV ruled the United Kingdom and Hanover from 1820 to 1830, having already run the country for nine years as Prince Regent while his father George III battled mental illness.
Friends called him "Prinny," and he lived large. He built the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, remodelled Buckingham Palace, and rebuilt Windsor Castle.
His only legitimate child, Princess Charlotte, died before him in 1817. With no heir of his own, the throne passed to his brother, William IV.
King William IV
Royal governess Lady Charlotte Finch collected a lock of William IV's hair in December 1782.
William ruled the United Kingdom and Hanover from 1830 to 1837, succeeding his brother George IV. His reign brought real reform: an updated Poor Law, restricted child labour, abolished slavery across most of the Empire, and the Reform Act 1832.
He died without an heir, so Victoria took the UK throne while his brother Ernest Augustus took Hanover, ending their 123-year union.
