Rare 45-star United States flag from Spanish-American war-era, circa 1896 - 1908.
This 88” by 57” flag was produced by an unknown maker between 1896 and 1908, the short period when the United States flew a 45-star Stars and Stripes.
Machine-sewn in wool, with double-appliqued cotton stars set in the 8-7-8-7-8-7 pattern and metal grommets on the header, which is marked “5x8”.
Some hand-sewn repair patches, moth holes, and some age discolouration. In very good condition overall.
This version of the Stars and Stripes was flown from July 4, 1896, when Utah became the 45th state in January of that year.
This was an expansionary period for the United States, of which martial president Teddy Roosevelt is perhaps the archetypal hero. He was first Secretary of the Navy, then the founder of the legendary Rough Riders cavalry volunteers in Cuba, then governor of New York, then Vice President and finally President when President William McKinley was assassinated.
The period saw the Spanish-American War confirm the US as a global imperial power as new territories - Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines - were acquired.
The flag was retired in 1908 as Oklahoma joined the Union.
This is a striking and extremely desirable remnant of one the key moments in United States history and a beautiful, eye-catching display item and conversation piece for students of history.
