Description

  • An authentic lock of hair from Queen Victoria (1837-1901)

Few British rulers have cast as long a shadow as Queen Victoria. Her reign lasted 63 years, which stood as the record up until great-granddaughter Elizabeth II surpassed her in 2015.

Britain was at the very height of its wealth and power during the Victorian era. Its colonies covered almost a third of the world’s land mass, making up the largest empire in history.

Queen Victoria married her beloved husband Albert in 1840. His sudden death in 1861 at the age of 42 was a blow from which she never recovered. She remained in mourning black for the rest of her days.

This is an authentic lock of fair hair from Queen Victoria, one of Britain’s most iconic rulers and a key figure in world history.

The lock was snipped when the queen was just a young girl. It was discovered, presented in its ebonised frame, in an antiques shop in Hemel Hempstead, UK in the mid-1960s.

A vintage handwritten label is affixed to the back of the frame. It reads: “Queen Victoria’s Hair when a girl, left w[ith] Miss Syke’s things”.

Miss Syke or Miss Sykes was likely a descendant of a member of Queen Victoria’s royal household.

Accompanied with several pieces of paperwork relating to the hair, compiled by the man who discovered it in the antiques shop in 1965.

Very few specimens of Victoria's hair have ever been offered for sale.

A fabulously rare display piece.
