Fascinating personal Falklands War collection of Admiral Lord Lewin
This substantial collection of official ephemera from and commemorating the Falklands War is from the collection of Admiral of the Fleet The Lord Lewin KG, GCB, LVO, DSC (1920-1999).
Included are:
- Lord Lewin’s original typed and annotated notes for his speech at the Dedication of the Falklands Memorial at St Paul's Cathedral on June 14, 1985 with Order of Service.
- A dinner guest list and seating plans for the dinner at Windsor Castle on April 6, 1983.
- A Falklands Veterans Dinner menu from May 16, 1985. Building plans for the Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel
- Other ephemera including photographs of memorial events.
Lord Lewin had a long association with the British Royal Family and the British Military.
He served first in World War II, when he was decorated for heroism. He also served alongside Prince Philip and was later to command the Royal Yacht.
By 1982 he had left the Royal Navy to become Chief of the Defence Staff, in which role he guided British forces during the Falklands War.
The Falklands War was sparked by the Argentinian invasion of the islands on April 2, 1982. The UK dispatched a naval task force to the South Atlantic, and after 74 days, the Argentinian forces surrendered on June 14, triggering the fall of the country’s military government.
During the fighting, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British service people, and three Falkland Islanders were killed.
Lord Lewin, a career sailor, was as close to and as key to these momentous events as anyone in British public life. This collection is a must for British military collectors.
