A Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Grande Taille Duoface 'Day & Night' gentleman's wristwatch, Ref. 270.2.54.
Featuring an 18k Rose Gold 26mm reversible case, bezel, winder and folded clasp, and its original brown leather strap.
The watch features two distinctive dials, each with its own complication and powered by the same mechanical movement, which can be alternately displayed using its innovative reverse mechanism.
On one side the case has a silver dial with Arabic numeral hour markers, and a seconds recorder in a sub-dial positioned at 6 o'clock.
And on the reverse it features a dial with Arabic numeral hour markers, and a 24 hour day/night recorder in a sub-dial also at 6 o'clock.
Manufactured circa 1994 - 2004. In good used condition, with its original box.
Provenance
This watch was formerly owned by John 'Duff' Lowe (1942-2024), a musician and original member of The Quarrymen - the band featuring Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison which became The Beatles.
Lowe was a schoolmate of Paul McCartney, who became friends in 1953 when they were 11 years old.
Lowe joined The Quarrymen at McCartney's request in February 1958, as they made the transition from skiffle to rock and roll, and played with them for around a year whenever a piano was available.
Lowe played on the band's only recording: an acetate demo recorded in July 1958 featuring a cover of Buddy Holly's 'That'll Be the Day' and 'In Spite of All the Danger', an original song written by McCartney and sung by Lennon.
Lowe ended up in possession of the acetate disc and kept it for 20 years, before selling it to McCartney in 1981. Today it is regarded as the world's most valuable record, and one of the most important recordings in music history.
Luxury watches with a direct link to The Beatles are exceptionally rare, and both the quality and provenance of this example make it a unique collector's piece of the highest order.
