- An iconic signed portrait of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill
- Taken on April 1, 1941 at 10 Downing Street, during a significant moment in WWII history
Winston Churchill (1874 –1965) was a politician and statesman who twice served as British Prime Minister, and is regarded as one of the most influential people in British history.
Churchill led Britain to victory against Nazi Germany during WWII, with his regular speeches and broadcasts inspiring resistance against Adolf Hitler during the darkest days of the conflict.
In 1963 he became the first person to be declared an honorary citizen of the United States, and following his death in 1965 he was granted a state funeral by Queen Elizabeth II to mark his service to the nation.
In addition to his political career, Churchill was a renowned writer and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953.
A vintage black and white photograph of Winston Churchill, measuring 16cm by 20cm.
The portrait was taken by renowned photographer Walter Stoneman for the National Photographic Record archive.
At the moment it was taken, Churchill was in the Cabinet Room awaiting a phonecall with news of the German invasion of Yugoslavia.
Sensing the significance of the occasion, Stoneman also recorded the exact hour of the sitting along with the date: "3pm, 1 April, 1941".
The print retains its original cardboard mount, which Churchill has signed below his portrait in black fountain pen ink.
A few faint spots to image, small, unobtrusive crease to lower left corner of mount, and a few light stains. Otherwise, in fine condition.
A superb signed copy of one of Churchill's most iconic and enduring WWII portraits.
