The Chalon portrait of Queen Victoria design in an engine-turned oval is part of the celebrated “Chalon Head” series used across several British colonies. The issued Tasmanian Chalons were recess-printed by Perkins Bacon in London and issued imperforate.
These were the last stamps inscribed “VAN DIEMENS LAND.” The colony formally changed name to Tasmania on 1 Jan 1856.
