Great Britain 1850 1d Red-brown Plate 70 (Archer Roulette Trial), SG16a
A very fine unused, with original gum, example of the rare Archer roulette trial from Plate 70, lettered 'RK'.
Shows the characteristic tiny split below the “P” of “PENNY”, commonly seen due to the fragile nature of the rouletting technique used during this experimental phase.
An exceptionally presentable example and well above average for this challenging and rare perforation trial printing.
This innovative, but ultimately unsuccessful early perforation attempt by Henry Archer, is a significant piece of philatelic history.
Accompanied by a 2012 British Philatelic Association (BPA) Certificate of authenticity.
Stanley Gibbons Catalogue Value: £12,000.
