GREAT BRITAIN 1841 1d Red Brown Plate 12 imprimaturs, SG8var
An outstanding unused imperforate imprimatur horizontal pair from the bottom right-hand corner of the sheet, lettered 'TK–TL'. This exceptional example includes part of the sheet inscription and the plate number “12”, which adds significantly to both its rarity and appeal.
The pair has been expertly re-joined, and the margins are full and well-balanced, with clear impressions and strong colour.
Provenance adds further prestige to this piece, having formerly resided in some of the most celebrated philatelic collections: Ex Earl of Crawford, Ex Bates (1934), and Ex Seymour (1951).
Such marginal multiples from imprimatur sheets are exceedingly scarce, especially with plate inscriptions and numbers intact, making this a trophy item for the advanced line-engraved specialist.
Plate 12 was put to press and registered on 25 February 1841. It was withdrawn from press on 15 September 1841 and destroyed on 15 January 1842.
