A very fine unused, with original gum, example of the world’s first postage stamp, the Penny Black, from plate 4, lettered 'LA'.
Features close to large four margins, with crisp impression and deep black shade.
Mint penny blacks with four clear margins are very scarce in such fine mint condition. A lovely example of the world’s first postage stamp and the most important stamp in the world you could possibly own.
Accompanied with a 2005 British Philatelic Association (BPA) certificate of authenticity.
Plate 4 was put to press on 18 May 1840 and registered on 19 May. It is known used on 23 May. It is known as a 'spotted plate' because many of the stamps show spots. These minute black dots are to be seen scattered in the margins and in the clear parts of the stamps, such as the corner squares.
