Description

  • A charming pair of childhood drawings by George V and his sister Princess Victoria, dated August 1877.

George V (1865 – 1936) was King of the United Kingdom from 1910 to 1936.

He was the son of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, Grandson of Queen Victoria and the older brother of Princess Victoria (1868 – 1935).

George V was also the first monarch in the current House of Windsor, having changed the family name from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1917.

These rare drawings are by 12 year-old George V and 9 year-old Princess Victoria on paper headed 'Marlborough House, Pall Mall S.W'.

George's drawing is a combination of pencil, watercolour and crayon, and is signed and inscribed in pencil to the verso:

“From George to Dear Mr Dalton, August 19, 1877.”

On the top half of the page, George has drawn a purple boat with two crew members on board.

On the bottom half, he has drawn a bearded with a hat and sword chasing an apple scrumper away from a large green apple tree.

The drawing, which measures 4.5 inches by 7.25 inches, features some slight ear to the left edge and one vertical fold, as is to be expected of documents from this time.

Princess Victoria's piece features a small watercolour painting which shows two men either side of a small hut containing a chair. Both men have large heads and noses.

The painting occupies approximately one third of the page, which also measures 4.5 inches by 7.25 inches.

Beneath the painting the Princess has written in blue and red crayons:

“From Victoria to Dear Mr Dalton, August 19, 1877”.

It features a light vertical fold, but is otherwise in fine condition.

The pieces were presented to Canon John Neale Dalton (1839 – 1931), who was Chaplain to Queen Victoria and a tutor to George V and his older brother Prince Albert Victor.

Two unique and delightful pieces of historic Royal memorabilia.
