CHINA 1912 Provisional Neutrality Overprint $2 Claret and Yellow, SG174
A superb example of the rare 1912 Provisional Neutrality issue, featuring a crisp overprint on the $2 claret and yellow “Chinese Imperial Post” design.
This fresh example with large part original gum is highly sought after as only 96 examples were officially sold, making it a great rarity of early Republican China philately.
The vivid colours and sharp impression highlight the beautiful design, with bold overprint.
Accompanied with a 1991 Steven C. Frumkin certificate of authenticity.
A top-tier addition to any serious China or provisional issue collection.
On 10 October 1911 a revolution began in Wuchang. Whilst awaiting the course of events, post offices in some cities overprinted imperial stamps with 'Provisional Neutrality'.
On 15 February 1912, Yuan Shih-kai was elected provisional president of the Chinese Republic. On 11 December 1915 he was elected Emperor, but in face of revolts he revoked the monarchy on 22 March 1916.
