Magnificent Desolation is Buzz Aldrin’s second volume of autobiography, and is a highly personal account of the struggle of coping with instant, world-wide superstardom. In it, Aldrin talks of his struggles with alcoholism and depression after his return to Earth.
Buzz Aldrin is the last surviving member of the Apollo 11 mission that put the first men on the Moon. He stepped on the surface of the Earth’s satellite around 19 minutes after Neil Armstrong.
Aldrin was born in New Jersey in 1930 and after a successful career as a fighter pilot was selected in the third batch of astronauts picked by NASA in 1963.
During his time with the space agency he spent more than 12 days in space.
