Picasso's lifelong love of pigeons began as a child in Spain. His father Don José Ruiz Blasco was an art teacher who kept pigeons and specialised in painting them.
He taught his son to draw them from an early age as they flew around the house, and Picasso would only attend school if he could take his pet pigeon wth him.
Pigeons remained a constant subject in Picasso's work throughout his artistic career, appearing in every different style and medium he worked in.
As such, this is a wonderful artwork featuring one of the defining themes of Picasso's life.
