William Fargo (1818-1881) was an American businessman who cofounded the famous express firm Wells, Fargo & Co. He served as the president of American Express from 1868 to his death in 1881. Today, the company is the 22nd most valuable brand in the world, estimated at $14.9bn.

This certificate, which features expected stamps and cancellation holes, is for fifty shares of stock in the American Express Company. It was issued to Slocum Howland, a notable Quaker and abolitionist, and is dated February 3, 1881 - just a few months before Fargo's death.

The certificate, headed American Express Company, measures 11.5" x 7.5". It is signed at the bottom by Fargo as the company president.
