Xu Beihong is regarded as the father of modern Chinese realist painting. His dynamic horse studies, painted in expressive ink and wash, became enduring symbols of Chinese strength and perseverance during the nation’s reconstruction period after WWII.
-
The issue was among the first high-value miniature sheets of the People's Republic of China and quickly became a favourite with both domestic and international collectors.
-
Because of the 5 yuan denomination, which was extremely high in 1978, most sheets were retained by officials or sold directly to collectors. Very few were used postally.
