British Solomon Islands 1907 6d chocolate 'large canoe', vertical pair, error imperforate between, SG6a.
A fine mind pair with large part original gum and with very fresh colour.
Plated as R3-4/2 on the sheet with diagnostic flaws. Minor gum soaking on top perforations, still fine for this major rarity.
A major rarity from the British Solomon Islands being a vertical pair with the error of having no perforations between the stamps.
The stamps issued in 1907 were the first “large canoe” stamps and are considered one of the most interesting areas in all of philately, often the subject of specific specialised collections.
The design is fascinating showing a war canoe called a “tomoko” used by warriors on headhunting expeditions. The palm trees on either side depict Coconut palms, which was the major trade at that time for the British Empire.
This error is extremely scarce, and especially so in this quality, with most examples having condition issues.
It is so rare, the last time this rarity was seen on the market was when it sold at a Robson Lowe auction in February 1973.
An ex Stanley Gibbons stock item with a Catalogue value of £7,000.
