One night only: The best of Scotland's whiskies appear in New York

This evening, December 7, Bonhams New York is having one of their fine whisky sales. The auction house already has a well-crafted reputation in the city as the finest place to buy truly rare and collectible single malts since the Folsom auctions of a year ago.

In this case, 320 lots are going under the hammer with some bottles which are quite clearly investment-grade.

Some less famous, but defiantly high-quality lots include a bottle of 12-year-old Ladyburn Scotch (750ml at 43%) which is expected to sell for around $3,000-4,000, and a Chivas Regal-25 year old, listed at $3,800-5,000.

Although the latter was aged in the cask for 25 years, there is no definitive listing for when the 40 fluid ounces were bottled, though it appears to have been early 20th century. The bottle looks like something from another world...

However, the top lots are likely to be more familiar to Scotch collectors, at least by eye if not by tongue. They are two very well-seasoned editions of The Macallan.

Firstly, there is a bottle of The Macallan 52 year old from 1946. This comes in its original wooden case with a key to keep prying lips away, and is expected to sell for $3,000 - 5,000.

Better still are two bottles of the classic 50 year old anniversary Malt, both in their original wooden cases and one with a 1983 dated letter from Chairman. Each bottle is expected to fetch $9,000 - 12,000 in the sale which starts at 5pm local time.
