Churchill's half-smoked cigar to sell

Winston Churchill is the best remembered of all the United Kingdom's Prime Ministers, for holding Britain together when faced with the Nazi threat.

The second thing that everyone recalls is his love of cigars, especially Cuban cigars. In fact, the famous Havana brand Romeo y Julieta has a seven inch cigar named the Churchill in recognition of this.

Given Churchill's love of them, few cigars in his possession were left without being fully smoked. But now one which he started during WW2 but didn't finish has come up for auction.

The cigar is on offer at Key's auctioneers in Aylsham with an estimate of just £350. However, given the demand for Churchill memorabilia (an old sofa belonging to the great man sold for £7,500 - 90 times the estimate - in 2009) it could easily fetch more than that.

The 4" La Corona cigar, with Churchill's name on the band, is accompanied by a note on Downing Street headed paper from Nellie Goble, a Downing Street aide to 'Jack', for whom is was obviously a present. The note, dated 22nd August 1941, reads:

"To Jack with all good wishes from Nellie, just a small souvenir to remind you at some future date of one of the greatest men that ever lived in England".

The auction takes place on January 29. Admirers of Churchill may also be interested to know that there is a signed picture of him currently available.
