Chateau Mouton Rothschild cellar auction to be held at Sotheby's

Sotheby's will host the first ever auction of wines direct from the cellar of the illustrious Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Asia on January 30 in Hong Kong, in celebration of the new lunar year of the ram.

The ram is a symbol of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, a first growth Bordeaux popular with Asian collectors. The sale will see 263 lots, spanning from 1870-2012.

"To make this auction an unforgettable event, we have chosen personally each of the lots. It is an exceptional selection not only for the quality and the variety of formats and vintages, from 1870 to 2012, but also because these precious bottles have never before left their native land, where they have been kept in ideal conditions," commented Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, chairman of the supervisory board of Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

The last ex-chateau auction from Mouton Rothschild saw a new world auction record for the most valuable bottle in any format after a jeroboam from 1945 sold for $310,700.

The highlight of the current sale will be a unique vertical of every vintage from 1945-2012, providing a once in a lifetime opportunity for one collector. It is valued at $120,000-250,000.

A special selection of Mouton's famous artist bottles, with labels decorated by some of the top names in fine art, will be sold. Offering all those to feature a ram in the design, of which there are eight, the selection includes John Huston, Keith Haring, Georg Baselitz, and the engraved Augsberg ram.
