Chateau Lafite-Rothschild brings $15k

Edward Roberts International held their much anticipated wine auction over the weekend.

The star lot was a case of 12 bottles of Château Lafite-Rothschild 1986 (eight bottles with the wine in the neck, four with it at the base of the neck). The vintage was given an exceptional rating of 99 points by world famous wine critic Robert Parker in 1994, when he noted that:

"The1986 possesses outstanding richness, a deep color, medium body, a graceful, harmonious texture, and superb length.

"Thepenetrating fragrance of cedar, chestnuts, minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this wine. Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, as well as medium to full-bodied, with awesome extraction of fruit, this Lafite has immense potential. Patience is required."

That obviously appealed to the audience at the Chicago auction. Starting the afternoon with a confident guide price of $7100 - 9700, it excelled itself with bids pushing it all the way up to a final price of $14,875.

A good start to the year for Edward Roberts International, and perhaps a good investment for the buyer, given the performance of red wine in the markets over the past decade.
