Bonhams is holding a sale of fine and rare wines in San Francisco and Los Angeles this week. The lots on offer include some very collectible examples, but not beyond the range of an entry level collector.
Unusually, the four figure wines include some sparkling Champagne: a three bottle lot of 1921 Pol Roger Vintage Champagne, Extra Cuvee De Reserve is offered with a guide price of $4,500-6,000. That's quite a celebration.
Naturally the red wines are the core of the auction, however, and unsurprisingly two of the most covetable lots are from Domaine de la Romanée Conti:
The first of these is a full twelve bottles of 1990 Romanée St Vivant - a vintage which has previously received an impressive 94 points from critic Robert Parker. It carries a guide price of $8,000-10,800.
The second is even more intriguing with just six bottles of the 1994 Montrachet offered with exactly the same estimate. Unfortunately, the catalogue does not list any of wine levels or the condition of the bottles, so investors will have to just the value of these prices at the auction itself.
The star of the show, however, is likely to be a three -or really two and a half - bottle lot of Château d'Yquem, Sauternes, with two bottles from 1954 and a half-sized one from 1950.
The highly regarded, and very rare, vintages are sometimes described as tasting of hazelnuts and tropical fruits respectively, and the lot as a whole is expected to sell for $9,000-12,450. The auction takes place this Saturday, June 12.
