Bottle of 1974 Ardbeg Whisky to be the toast of collectors at a German auction next weekend

Collectors and connoisseurs may want set a reminder in their calendar for next Saturday, September 25, 2010.

It's the day that Rendsburg in Germany will play host to an auction of whisky which is set to feature 84 sellers from a total of countries.

And the good news for those whisky enthusiasts spread across the world is that you can bid online for these very special lots.

The sale itself will feature Islay and Highland malts alongside classic scotch bottles from the Campeltown and Lowland regions.

Whilst for those collectors with a smaller budget, the event will also offer the chance to buy whisky miniatures.

However, for those investors looking for a more substantial purchase, the event also boasts a whole host of top quality bottles.

A 1974 Ardbeg is widely considered to be the pick of the bunch.

Widely considered to be one of the fastest growing Islay based distilleries, Ardbeg has a rich history dating back to 1815.

The distillery closed for a period of eight years in 1981, before reopening on a limited basis and then being bought out in 1997.

This bottle comes from the initial run of Ardbeg whisky having been bottled in 1974 and is something of a rarity of today's market.

Measuring 750ml in size and with a 55% alcohol volume, this limited edition bottle, originally sold in 2000, has already reached an online bid of £753 ($1,175).

Given that there remains around a week until the close of this auction, the price of this precious scotch could well double from now.

The sale officially closes from 7.45pm to 9.20pm central European time next Saturday, with the 1974 Ardbeg expected to close at 8.55pm.
