A wine with '50-60 years of life in front of it' offers a rare opportunity in Amsterdam

Next week in Amsterdam, Christie's will be offering wine lovers and investors the opportunity to take home some early Christmas presents for themselves or others.

With 268 lots going under the hammer, 33 lots are from each of the great vineyards of Mouton and Lafite-Rothschilds. Overall, the most anticipated lots are:

A 1996 DRC assortment comprising 12 bottles, specifically Romanée-Conti(1), La Tâche(2), Richebourg(2), Romanée-Saint-Vivant (3), Grands-Echézeaux (1) and Echézeaux (3) all from 1996.

These have recently been removed from what Christie's describes as 'excellent cellarage' and are offered in their original wooden case with a Dutch import stamp at a more than reasonable €12,000-16,000 (up to $21,800).

Perhaps our personal pick for an investment would be a case of Château Lafite-Rothschild 2000.

If it sells for the expected €14,000-18,000, it has two strong factors going for it. Firstly, world-famous critic Robert Parker once graded it at 100 (though he later downgraded this to a mere 98) and recently predicted that it has "50-60 years of life in front of it".

Lafite wines are also proving particularly popular with the growing Chinese wine market, possibly because 'Lafite' sounds like 'on the way up' in that country.

The expected top lot in the sale, however is a set of magnums: two each from Château Latour,
Château Margaux, Château Haut-Brion and Château Pétrus - all Vintage 2000. This is expected to sell for €16,000 - €20,000 in Christie's sale on November 23.
