A nice drop: Christie's fine wine auction is led by $579,200 Chateau Lafite vertical

In a few weeks time, Christie's will be holding another of its auctions of the finest and rarest wines, with a spectacular twist in it.

The auction is dominated by Bordeaux, especially Chateau Mouton and Chateau Lafite, with over 200 of the 480 wine lots (not including port or Champagne) being of one of those two vineyards.

There are a handful of high quality Burgundy wines, specifically DRC vintages on offer for the sale for those collectors who specialise in those.

But really, there can only be one talking point in the auction as one of the Lafite lots is sufficiently spectacular that it has found its way into the name of the auction.

This is a spectacular Chateau Lafite-Rothschild vertical - worthy of becoming a tasting session at the table of Lloyd Flatt or Bipin Desai - dating from 1981 to 2005.

There is a whole case of 12 bottles per year, resulting in a lot of 300 bottles exactly. Each case in the vertical has been chosen by the vendor for its perfect condition and pristine appearance. Most have wine levels clearly in the neck and all are in their original wooden cases.

In the words of Christie's, "These wines have been lovingly stored in perfect condition since purchase and will reward the purchaser with years of liquid pleasure."

The auction of this valuable asset will take place in Hong Kong, which should be exciting as Lafite is the wine above all others that China has taken to its heart. The estimate is set at HK$3.5m-4.5m ($450,517-$579,236) in the sale which takes place on September 3-4.
