A look ahead to Sotheby's 40th anniversary September rare wine sale

Next month, Sotheby's are holding a sale of finest and rarest wines - their 40th anniversary sale, in fact.

Last year at around the same time in New York they were selling wines from an important private collection in New York, and the sale achieved $3.3m, being headed by a 12 bottle lot of Château Pétrus 1982.

Described by Sotheby's Serena Sutcliffe as having "...a lovely sweet 'leather' taste. Now has a pruney finish, with sweet, soft cinnamon at the end.", and held in its original wooden case, it outstripped its $25,000-35,000 estimate despite the recession to bring $54,450.

This year should be one to watch. Their wine sales this year have been going from strength to strength with a particular highlight being 12-bottles of Chateau Lafite 1982 at $48,400 (against a similar estimate)in June.

But Sotheby's will want to outdo that with the anniversary sale which is taking place in London. Taking place over two days: September 22-23, and collectors and investors will want to clear their schedules in order to be a part of it. Watch this space for more details as they come in.
