A Celebration of Bordeaux hopes to revive market at HDH

Hart Davis Hart will hold A Celebration of Bordeaux on October 31 in Chicago, in a sale offering $5.5m of the finest bottles.

Hart Davis Hart is the top-selling wine auction house in the US, with the power to influence the market

The auction hopes to inject new life into the Bordeaux market, which has shown signs of recovery recently following three years of decline. With more than 100 chateaux represented, the auction house aims to showcase classic vintages alongside newer names, highlighting the innovation in the region.

Bordeaux holds the largest share of the auction market, but has recently been replaced by Burgundy as the top-selling region at Hart Davis Hart.

This trend has been witnessed across the board, with a 114-bottle lot of the illustrious DRC Romanee-Conti selling for a record price of $1.6m at Sotheby's earlier this month.

"Bordeaux continues to lose market share, and the main reason is that the 2005 and younger vintages are simply not trading actively," said John Kapon, CEO of wine auctioneer Acker, Merrall & Condit.

"Yet there are definite opportunities in older Bordeaux, as I am a firm believer that if something [sold] consistently at a certain price level in the past, it will do so again."

Hart Davis Hart has selected three innovative chateaux for the focus of the sale, offering wines direct from the cellars of Chateau Cheval Blanc, Chateau Montrose and Chateau Pichon-Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande.

Also featuring is a 586-lot consignment from the historic Fox Cellar, with over 100 First Growths and more than 200 lots with perfect, or almost perfect scores from foremost wine critic Robert Parker.
