$51,289 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild 1982 hits the right note in Chicago

It has been a good few days for consignors of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild 1982. Following on from the vintage's roaring success at Heritage on Friday, a 12-bottle lot outshone the competition at Edward Roberts' sale in Chicago on May 7.

12 bottles of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild 1982 made $51,289

Lot 37 came in within its pre-sale estimate, eventually selling for $51,289. This was far beyond the next best seller, six bottles of 2002 Domaine Leroy Romanee St-Vivant, which made $10,353.

Chateau Lafite-Rothschild 1982 has won many fans over the years, including wine expert Robert Parker. Writing in The Wine Advocate, Parker called it the "modern day equivalent of Lafite-Rothschild's immortal 1959", adding that the 1982 "will enjoy another 30-70 years of life", which is great news for fine wine investors.

All items in the 542-lot event sold, which included the famed collection of the Chicago area's Le Francais restaurant, which closed in 2003.
