50-year-old Springbank leaps to the top spot in online sale

WhiskyAuction's online sale of fine and rare single malts concluded this weekend with some healthy results for the best drams.

One interesting aspect was the solid performance of the Japanese whiskey brand Karuizawa with five bottles of the 1967 distillation (bottled in 2009) achieving just over €800 each.

The main achievers however were more familiar brands of Scotch single malt: Ardbeg and Springbank.

Specifically, an original bottling of Ardbeg Bourbon of the July 1974 distillation, cask number 3306 (bottled August 2006), bottle number 48 of 126.

Earlier this year, the site sold a bottle from a bottle barrelled in that same year in cask number 2742 which Jim Murray's Whisky Bible rated at 92 out of 100 (putting it in the Brilliant category), commenting:

"...cooing vanilla and citrus, the peats are dry and dainty; lust, beautifully textured barley, juicy sultana and a slow evolving of peat: a seduction of the highest order; how can anything so gentle last so long..."

No comparable compliments can be found for the contents of this cask, but in this case the 52.7% by volume, 70cl bottle sold for €1,555 - a decent investment.

The star of the show however was a Springbank. Some of the details are missing, but it is a 50 year old pure single malt in its original case, and bidders were sufficiently impressed to offer €2,105.

WhiskyAuction should be giving some more details on its next auction soon, and we'll bring them to you as they come in.
