Edinburgh's Scotch Whisky Experience has sold the most expensive ever addition to its specialist shop.

The limited edition Ardbeg Double Barrel sold after being on display for just three days.

Two single cask bottles of Ardbeg 1974 were sold together for £10,000. They were presented in a specially crafted gun case.

1974 is the oldest and rarest of the Ardbeg single Islay malts, and only 250 of the 'Double Barrel' cases were ever created. It is owned by Moet Hennessy, the luxury brands group.

Also included in the price were eight solid silver drinking cups and a bespoke oak and sterling silver Omas pen complete with intricate Ardbeg engraving.

The case also contained two hand-stitched leather bound books. They were originally used as a 'Sampling Register', with full detailed notes of the 1974 cask bottling.

The buyer, a Burmese whisky collector, will be taking his prized purchase home at the end of the month.

The Ardbeg Double Barrel went on display on Monday August 17 with other rare collections in The Scotch Whisky Experience's specialist whisky shop, next to Edinburgh Castle, Scotland.
