Vintage Oxford clock chimes at £37k

A Charles II walnut hooded wall clock with alarm struck way past its £15,000-20,000 estimate at Dreweatts' Clocks and Scientific Instruments auction yesterday, February 17.

Thought to have been crafted by John Knibb, a clockmaker and later twice Mayor of Oxford, circa 1685, it realised a final hammer price of £37,000.

An important Charles II walnut 30-hour striking hooded wall clock, sold for £37k

A contributing factor to the clock's final hammer price may have been in mysterious owner history. It is thought to have belonged in a connoisseur collection of Antiques and Works of Art, in the early 20th century.

Aside from that, the timepiece's alluring features include a square gilt brass dial with a silvered arm disc and finely sculpted steel hand, Roman numerals and fleur-de-lys half-hour markers typical of Knibb's clock making.

The clock was discovered by the vendor while sorting though effects inherited from a family member over 50 years ago.
