Vacheron Constantin Apollo 14 watch to beat $60,000?

RR Auction will offer a 1971 Vacheron Constantin Ref. 6351 watch with an Apollo 14 dial in its upcoming space memorabilia sale.

The piece was gifted to astronaut Alan Shepard by the citizens of Geneva following his return from the Apollo 14 mission.

Apollo 14 watch

The watch is one of three made for the Apollo 14 astronauts

Two others were made for Shepard’s fellow Apollo 14 astronauts, Edgar Mitchell and Stu Roosa.

Mitchell’s watch sold at Christie’s last year for $62,500.

We expect the present lot to sell for slightly more; given Shepard was the commander on the mission.

The consignor explains: "When NASA was founded my grandfather had an affiliation with them, I am not sure where he met Alan Shepard either through NASA or through his dentistry practice...

“When my grandfather died in '99 there was a watch left for my Dad in his will and he kept it in a safe deposit box ever since.”

A wealth of artefacts from across the history of the space race will feature at the October 19 sale, including Gemini astronaut Gus Grissom’s 1965 training glove.

This was the G-4C model, the final produced before the introduction of the Apollo suits.

Tragically, Grissom would be killed in the fire that broke out on Apollo 1 on January 27, 1967.
