Patek Philippe smashes estimate at 'highest-ever total' Hong Kong watches sale

Hong Kong continues to rack-up auction successes, again for Sotheby's with the sale of a Patek Philippe platinum and diamond set wristwatch for way over its pre-sale estimate.

The calendar chronograph wristwatch dated to circa 2009 (Ref 5971P) - whose features include Moon-phases and leap year indication - realised a final price of $271,795.

Also sold at the same auction was a Cartier diamond-set jadeite coral, onyx, mother-of-pearl and rock crystal mystery clock dated to circa 1980. It brought $233,333.

"Today's auction achieved the highest-ever total for a various-owner sale of important watches at Sotheby's Hong Kong," said Vanessa Herrera, Head of Watches for Sotheby's China and Southeast Asia.

"We are extremely pleased with the results. One factor which makes the market for Important Watches so fascinating is that it is constantly renewed by the creation of new masterpieces," she said, in reference the 2009 Patek Philippe.

According to Sotheby's, Asian and European collectors enthusiastically competed for exceptional examples of haute horlogerie by Greubel Forsey, Richard Mille, Audemars Piguet and others, alongside the big sales achieved for Patek Philippe and Cartier.
