Hollywood magic blesses $256,000 'Paul Newman' watch in Geneva sale

While the World Record sale of the $45.75m 'fancy intense' pink diamond - now the most expensively priced diamond ever sold at auction - stole all the headlines, Sotheby's also enjoyed success among the collectible watch lots offered in its Geneva sale (Tuesday, November 16).

A particular highlight was this rare stainless steel chronograph Rolex 'Paul Newman' Oyster wristwatch, dated to circa 1966, regarded by collectors as being among the most incredible Rolexes ever produced.

Aside from sharing its name with a late Hollywood icon, the 37mm diameter watch also boasts very rare chocolate coloured dial registers, white engine-turned subsidiary dials for constant seconds and 17 jewels.

Under the timepiece's stainless steel surface these aesthetics are powered by no less than 727 manual winding movements, complimented by a 30-minute and 12-hour register.

The Oyster Cosmograph Daytona 'Paul Newman', ref 6263/6239, appeared at Sotheby's with an estimate of 60,000-80,000 CHF (more than $80,400); the high end of which it almost tripled to bring a final price of 254,500 CHF ($255,900 - including Buyer's Premium).
