Christie's to auction $1.28m Patek Philippe wristwatch

Christie's in Hong Kong is currently gearing up for their auction of Important Watches including The Millennium Collection, following their triumph in Geneva a few weeks back with the second highest price ever paid for a wristwatch at auction.

The historically important Patek Philippe from 1943 sold for the equivalent of $5.7m, easily clearing its $1.4m-2.25m estimate. Now another Patek Philippe with a seven figure guide price is going under the hammer, in the up-and-coming market for timepieces rather than their home in the Swiss city.

Patek's Sky Moon Tourbillon, crafted in 2007, features 12 complications within its round, platinum case, as displayed on two dials.

The front dial is opaline with Patek Philippe Calatrava cross logos, applied white gold Roman numerals, achemin-de-fer minute ring, subdials for day, month, leap year and ages of the moon and a retrograde date display in red enamel.

The reverse presents a silvered 24-hour scale and Arabic numerals for sidereal time, with an ellipse framing the visible sky (marked out with cardinal points) and a planisphere of the Northern Hemisphere rotating counterclockwise above the dial.

A disc offers a moon phase display and the dial has white-lacquered gold feuille hour and minutes hands.

The exceptionally rare and collectible watch goes under the hammer during the June 2 auction, where given recent results in the world of collectible watches many may be looking to buy it as an investment.

Christie's are also intending a major sale of fine timepieces in New York in two weeks' time. Watch this space for more.
