World's most valuable Barbie brings $302,500 at Christie's New York

She arrived at the auction wearing necklace of pink and white diamonds and a black strapless dress, and left with a lucky bidder for $302,500 (£191,000)...

Thankfully it wasn't a real woman but Barbie, every little girl's favourite doll. The iconic toy once again turned heads in New York, more than 51 years after her debut exhibition in the Big Apple.

And, as well as boasting a career twice as long as Madonna's, she can now also claim a new World Record price. The doll auctioned at Christie's is now the most valuable Barbie in the world.

Barbie, with jewellery and clothing designed by Stefano Canturi

Although she did have some help... The auctioned Barbie was wearing a one carat pink diamond necklace surrounded by three carat white diamonds designed by jeweller Stefano Canturi.

Canturi also designed the blonde doll's black strapless party dress, stilettos and blonde hair (pictured above).

Of course, with a five-decades career behind her, this isn't the first time that Barbie has appeared at auction. The previous world auction record set by the doll was £10,785 at Christie's London, back in 2006.

The 2006 result was considerably improved upon with this week's sale. According to reports, the funds from the New York Barbie auction are going to aid breast cancer research.
