Napoleon Bonaparte, one of the most famous military and political leaders in history, abdicated 200 hundred years ago today, on June 22 1815.
It was the second time he had been forced to do so, after his defeat by the armies of the Seventh Coalition, an Anglo-Allied force led by the Duke of Wellington, in the Battle of Waterloo several days earlier.
Despite Napoleon's loss, he has been remembered by history as a talented general and leader, and is still someone who generates a lot of interest even today.
Items connected to him have become valuable in themselves, and as a key figure in one of the most crucial historical periods ever, he will always be of interest to collectors of military and warfare memorabilia, as well as more general investors.
For example, if you wanted to own a copy of his signature it would set you back by $9,597, which indicates his autograph is one of the most valuable it is possible to own.
As with most well-known historical figures, it is likely the importance and worth of such items will increase in time, especially as they become rarer.
For those hoping to make a return on their investment, or those just wanting to own a piece of hugely significant history, items like this are about as good as it gets.
