Edward Gorey's eerie $6,000 elephants star in San Francisco auction

Writer and artist Edward St John Gorey (1925-2000) made his eerie presence felt at PBA's October 7 books auction.

Nine hand-pulled collagraphs by Gorey, entitled Elefantômas and dated to 1986, were the star lot in the San Francisco sale.

While reprints of Gorey's books can be found in the humour and cartoon sections of major bookstores, original copies of his art and other works are now proving very popular among collectors.

Consigned from the Henry Toledano Collection, focussing on Gorey's unusual works, the collagraphs in the end sold for $6,000.

A First Edition Dr Doolittle adventure from 1920

It sold alongside a well-known first edition from 1920: The Story of Doctor Doolittle Place by Hugh Lofting.

Including illustrations by the author and contained within its original orange cloth (with some light wear and a chip to the spine) the book sold for a bargain $3,000.
