- Einstein wrote it in June 1939, on the brink of World War II
- It concerns the plight of Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis
- It's a powerful statement on Einstein's own heritage
- And it comes with official provenance from the Albert Einstein estate
The history of this signed letter is incredibly well-documented.
It comes to the market directly from the original owner's family.
It's a truly world-class collector's item.
Let me tell you the story behind it...
This Albert Einstein signed letter is completely fresh to the market after 84 years.
The history of the letter
Einstein fled Germany in 1933, as the Nazis began their rise to power.
He was one of the lucky ones. He escaped with his life.
So in 1939, on the brink of WWII, he was determined to help other desperate Jewish refugees find safety in America.
On March 22, 1939, Einstein gave a passionate radio address on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal.
He was heavily involved in national campaigns to raise money and awareness for Jewish refugees.
And on June 10, 1939 he personally sent letters to several Jewish civic leaders, thanking them for their contributions to the cause.
This is one of those letters.
It was sent to the prominent New York businessman Mr Nathan Leavy. And it has remained in his family since the day he received it, 84 years ago.
Only a handful of these letters have ever surfaced.
In 2021 a letter sent to talent agent William Morris sold for $63,195.
Another sent to Dr. Maurice Lenz sparked a bidding war between 23 collectors and sold for $134,343.
You can be the very first collector to own this example.
For only $35,000.
The letter is offered directly from the family of the original recipient Mr Nathan Leavy.
A profound, personal statement
The letter is based on Einstein's historic radio speech in March 1939.
It's a powerful statement on his own faith and heritage.
He writes:
"The power of resistance which has enabled the Jewish people to survive for thousands of years has been based to a large extent on traditions of mutual helpfulness.
“In these years of affliction our readiness to help one another is being put to an especially severe test. May we stand this test as well as did our fathers before us.
“We have no other means of self-defense than our solidarity and our knowledge that the cause for which we are suffering is a momentous and sacred cause.”
Einstein's profound personal statement on his own Jewish heritage greatly increases the value of this letter.
The perfect Einstein autograph
The condition reflects the care with which this letter was preserved.
It's typed on a single sheet of Einstein's personal stationery, embossed with his address at Princeton University.
The page measures 8.5'' x 11'' and is presented in very good condition, with just faint horizontal mailing folds and minor creasing.
Einstein's own words are clear on the page, undiminished by time.
And his signature is a perfect specimen.
Signed crisply in black ink, with his name typed neatly below.
It's the definitive scientific autograph of the 20th century.
And a defining display piece for your collection.
The perfect Albert Einstein autograph, signed on June 10, 1939.
Unquestionable provenance
The letter is accompanied by three further letters which attest to its historic importance.
All three are signed by Einstein's close friend Otto Nathan, the executor and co-trustee of his estate.
In 1979 the Einstein Estate contacted Mr Leavy to obtain a copy of this letter for their archives.
“A mutual friend has advised me that you possess a letter which Albert Einstein addressed to you on June 10 1939... [and] that you would be prepared to make a photostatic copy of that letter available to us.
“There is no need to emphasize the significance of such an archive for historical research now and in many years to come.”
Having sent them a copy, Leavy received a reply in January 1980 which thanked him for “a valuable contribution to our collection which we much appreciate”.
These documents confirm the provenance and importance of the Leavy letter.
It warrants a place in the official Einstein Estate archive.
But whereas they merely own a photocopy...
You can own the original.
You'll also receive original correspondence from the Albert Einstein Estate, which confirms the history and provenance of the letter.
A valuable asset for the futureThe value of Albert Einstein memorabilia is well established.
He is undeniably one of the most prized names in all of collecting.
