Rudy Ruettiger's Notre Dame uniform makes $241,500

The helmet and jersey Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger wore for his single legendary appearance for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in 1975 has sold for $241,500.

Ruettiger, then a student at Notre Dame, had long harboured a dream to play for the famous college football team.

However, at 5'6" and 165 pounds he was too small to play.

Rudy's dream was to play for the Fighting Irish

Despite this, he worked hard to establish himself as an asset and eventually earned a place on the practise squad in his junior year.

The next season Ruettiger was sat on the side-lines of a game against Georgia Tech when coach Dan Devine decided to give him the shot he’d been dreaming of.

Three plays in, he sacked Georgia Tech's quarterback - to the delight of both his teammates and the crowd.

A feature film would be released in 1993.

Ruettiger said: "Over 40 years ago, in 1975, I could never have imagined what that moment on that field in South Bend would mean to my life nor the lives of so many that I have been so fortunate to meet.

"The feeling I had that day on the field as well as the experiences and blessings it has brought to me and my family simply cannot be qualified."

The lot was sold last week as part of Hunt Auctions’ Super Bowl Auction.
